Glowing, smooth, and wrinkle-free skin is what we all dream of. Some of us are even willing to go to great lengths to achieve this. As we age, our skin naturally loses its strength and elasticity, our collagen production starts to decrease, and we eventually start to gain a few more lines than we had hoped. Don’t get me wrong; I think a face full of wrinkles shares a whole lifetime of smiles and memories. If there is a natural way to prolong the aging process, then I am absolutely going to give it a try.
Well, I have great news! There is a way, and it is a lot less expensive than some of the treatments out there – not to mention safer too. The foods we consume greatly impact our entire body, mostly affecting our skin. Food is loaded with micronutrients that all have special jobs within our body to help it function efficiently. As we age, our collagen production starts to decrease, and we can really benefit from supplementing to help ensure we are making adequate amounts.
Micronutrients, vitamins and minerals, along with antioxidants help reduce and repair oxidative damage that happens from being exposed to too much sunlight, free radicals, and environmental stresses. Our skin is our first barrier of protection against the damages of the sun, pathogens, and infection when we receive an injury. Malnutrition, which is the lack of essential nutrients, can actually change the appearance and texture of the skin, ultimately increasing early aging.
Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in your body. It is found in your bones, muscles, skin, blood, tendons, and digestive system. It even gives your skin its natural glow, as it makes up about 70% of your skin’s protein content. As collagen production decreases, women end up losing about 1% with each year of age, which causes an extreme drop by menopause. It eventually causes thinner and less elastic skin.
There are several different types of collagen, each targeting different tissues. Marine collagen is a Type I collagen which is primarily found in the structure of skin. It helps improve the elasticity and firmness by supporting the body’s natural production. It is also known to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also slowing down the aging process over time. It also enters the blood stream faster than any other type of collagen due to its bioavailability.
AMPD Nutrition’s unflavored Marine Collagen is a great source of daily collagen to add to shakes, acai bowls, or even coffee. The powder dissolves right away leaving no trace of a gritty texture, which can be super unappealing. I added it to this strawberry cheesecake smoothie to reap all of the healthy skin benefits in one delicious shake.
AMPD Nutrition’s Pro Vanilla is the ultimate plant-based protein. It is made from a unique combination of specialized proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that work synergistically to support our body’s systems at the cellular level. It provides a wide range of vitamins and minerals for comprehensive support and helps maintain a healthy metabolism with B vitamins, zinc, and chromium. It also enhances weight management, body composition, and bone health with calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium. It is easy to digest as plants are much easier on the digestive system, which greatly reduces negative side effects such as gas and discomfort or pain.
Dates have been around for thousands of years. Some records indicate origins from Iran; however, the Egyptians were also known to make wine in much earlier times. They are packed full of micronutrients such as vitamins C, D, B1, B2, B3, B5, and A while also rich in selenium, manganese, copper, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Dates help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of bone disease such as osteoporosis. Being high in vitamin C and D, they also improve skin’s texture and elasticity while also having anti-aging effects. They have a nice, sweet, almost nutty flavor, and make great snacks. Adding them to a morning shake or even consuming a few before a good workout can give you a little boost of energy.
Cashews are high in vitamins C and B while also rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. They are high in fatty acids which help reduce high cholesterol and greatly lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. They are originally from Brazil and have a light delicate flavor. Cashews are also high in copper which plays a huge role in collagen maintenance. Copper’s role in collagen production is linked to the enzyme lysl oxidase, making copper a co-factor to the enzyme’s activity level. Lysl oxidase helps hold tissue’s structure, and in a copper deficiency, its production is greatly impacted. Cashews are a great food to pair with collagen supplements as it helps boosts the body’s natural collagen production.
Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits, especially straight from the patch in the summer when they are in season. They are super sweet and juicy and have some amazing health benefits. They are super high in polyphenols that aid in heart disease prevention. Strawberries contain high amounts of antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress from the environment. They are also high in essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, along with high amounts of potassium which helps lower blood pressure.
Coconut milk is a great alternative to dairy products for those who are lactose intolerant or have food allergies and intolerances. It has a mild sweet flavor and is thick enough to replace dairy milk in any shake!
